Monkeys set to swing into number one

Date: 24/01/2006

Arctic Monkeys' debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, hit record store shelves yesterday and is set to become one of the fastest selling debut albums of all time.

The target in the album's sights is Oasis' 1994 debut Definitely Maybe, which currently holds the record for the fastest selling debut album in the UK.

"They have got a fresh, new sound and it's a bit different and original.Monkeys set to swing into number one But with the hype and level of excitement that goes with it, people get swept away a little bit by that too and want to find out what the excitement is about," said HMV's Gennaro Castaldo to the BBC's 6 Music.

Both of the band's first two singles from the album have entered the UK singles chart at number one, with Sunday seeing the debut at the top for When the Sun Goes Down.

Last year, the band's first single I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor, also debuted at the top of the official UK top 40, largely due to internet hype and promotion.
