| R&B artist Lemar was the big winner at the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) awards in London last night. The singer won best album and best UK act at the awards, which were voted for by the public. Lemar said he was "over the moon", adding: "This is so unexpected, I'm taken aback." Lemar beat soul singer Joss Stone and rapper Estelle to the UK act of the year title, but he didn't have it all his own way, losing best R&B act title to American talent John Legend. Rapper Sway, who sells his music on the streets of his native north London, beat established names such as 50 Cent and The Game to the prize of best hip hop act. The son of reggae god Bob Marley, Damian Marley, was named best reggae act, and he and his brothers performed a tribute to their father. Meanwhile, rap legends Public Enemy, who trailed a blaze for hip hop when it was just emerging from the underground, received the outstanding contribution to black music award. |
