DMX family brushes with law

Date: 16/08/2006

DMX may have his own trouble with the law at the moment but it seems that he is not the only one.

It has been reported that the rapper's brother-in-law and nanny have been charged and have appeared in court, just days after the hip hop star himself spent a night in a cell. DMX was held overnight by police after failing to appear in court to answer charges relating to motoring offences and is due to go before White Plains City Court on August 25th.

DMX has been charged with speeding and driving with a suspended license and despite being offered a plea bargain which would have resolved the case, the rap star refused and is now awaiting his day in court.

However, in the meantime it seems that the rapper will be busy helping out his family, after his brother-in-law and nanny were brought into court on felony drug charges. The accusations relate to eight ounces of cocaine claimed to have been found in the car in which the pair were riding, reports the Journal News.

County police stopped John Draughn, the brother of DMX's wife, over the weekend and he was arrested having failed to produce a driving license. Deputy chief inspector Roger Rokicki told the Journal News that police discovered the cocaine while searching the vehicle.

The car was leased to a company owned by DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, and the hip hop artist's lawyer, Murray Richman, arrived in court to defend Draughn and nanny Olivia Blankendal. However, the waters were muddied when it was revealed Draughn had told police the cocaine was his, insisting that the nanny knew nothing of the presence of the substance in the vehicle.

As a result, Blankendal was released on $2,500 bail, while Draughn was held without bail and is now due to appear in court once again next week.

The event has dragged DMX and his family into the eye of the law again after it was revealed that the two were stopped by police as Draughn drove the nanny from her usual shift at the home of DMX, his wife and children. Although there is no suggestion that DMX had any part of play in this incident, it is not what the rapper needed ahead of his own upcoming court appearance later this month.
