Christmas song gets October spoof

Date: 18/10/2005

It's that time of year when Christmas pop songs start to play in shops across the country.

But in America for a few more weeks, Do They Know It's Christmas, the famous Band Aid track, will be drowned out by a spoof version of the popular song.

Do They Know It's Halloween, featuring Beck, Sum 41, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is going to be pumping out of speakers all across the US as it gets ready for October 31st.

All proceeds from the record will go to UNICEF, the global children's charity and the record's organisers say it's just a bit of fun.

"It [the Band Aid song] just perpetuates this myth of Africa as this infertile ground where 'nothing ever grows, no rain or river flows'," said writer Nicholas Diamonds.

"It’s obviously not true. We wanted to balance it… but have fun doing it."

There is no reports of a ringtone yet, but if one surfaces the tone will face tough Halloween competition.

A resurgent Michael Jackson is sure to be heard singing Thriller in a lot of places when mobile phones across the country ring on October 31st.
